About me

Hi there. My name is Sylvia Nowak.

Portrait of Sylvia Nowak

I am a documentary artist, working in a variety of media. My work involves video and photography, and the digital online space formerly known as “new media.”

Currently, I am exploring the archive and its relationship to activism and representation.

I am in the midst of my MFA studies in Documentary Media at Ryerson Universit, and also hold a BFA in Photography from Ryerson and a postgraduate certificate in Journalism New-Media from Sheridan College.

My work has been exhibited at the former Ryerson Gallery (when it was on Spadina), AWOL Gallery, Image Arts building and the Gladstone Hotel and I have screened at the Ekran Film Festival. A documentary I co-produced about the furry subculture won the Best Documentary award at Sheridan College.

My dog, Zarya, is probably the cutest dog ever, and I probably photograph her way too often. She deserves more attention than I do, she’s a very good girl.

I am available for freelance and contract work in: videography, post-production, photography, retouching, research and front-end design and development.

You can contact me at sylvia.nowak [at] gmail.com – or check my contact page for other ways to get in touch.
